The BAFTAs 2019 have caused the bookies to slash the odds on Oscars winners as The Favourite and Olivia Colman dominated the ceremony last night, on Sunday, February 11. Elsewhere, Roma won best picture and Rami Malek won best actor for his Freddie Mercury portrayal in Bohemian Rhapsody. But how will this affect what happens at the Academy Awards later this month?

When are the Academy Awards?

In the UK, die-hard film fans will have to stay up late to catch the 2019 Academy Awards live on air.

The awards show, commonly called the Oscars, will be airing at 1 am GMT on Monday, February 25, 2019.

Before the Oscars, there are a host of other awards, like the Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, and the Critics Choice Awards, which impact the odds for Oscar wins and disappointments…

What will win Best Picture?

According to oddsmakers, the film most likely to win Best Picture at this year’s Oscars is Roma at 2/7.

In second place is the historical drama Green Book, starring Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen, which bookies predict is 9/2 for the top prize.

The Favourite and BlacKkKlansman both come in third at 25/1 while tied at 33/1 odds are Bohemian Rhapsody, A Star is Born, and Black Panther.

Lastly according to oddsmakers is Vice with long odds of 100/1 – but the awards are anyone’s game right now.

Will Roma win Best Picture at the Oscars 2019?

Roma seems safely ahead given it is the first foreign language movie up for the Best Picture category.

However, the movie was produced by Netflix and the streaming giant is often snubbed at the Academy Awards.

Roma is a Spanish/Mixtec language semi-autobiographical drama which details the life of a middle-class family and their live-in housekeeper, Cleo.

In contrast, Green Book was a hit with critics, and at the BAFTAs where Maherashala Ali won for Best Supporting Actor.

RAMI MALEK OSCARS ODDS: WHAT ARE MALEK’S ODDS TO WIN BEST ACTOR OSCAR?

However, the movie has taken a hit on social media due to controversial remarks made by its director.

Bohemian Rhapsody was generally considered the upset when it won the Golden Globe for Best Picture.

Queen biopic star Rami Malek took home the Golden Globe and BAFTA wins for Best Actor.

The Favourite, which won Oliva Colman the Best Actress Golden Globe, Critics Choice and BAFTA may yet stage a coup, however.

Although Bohemian Rhapsody’s odds for winning best picture have waned, Rami Malek’s odds for a Best Actor award have shortened.

He leads Christian Bale (Vice) and Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born) at four to seven.

Many oddsmakers and movie fans alike will look to the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and Critics’ Choice Awards as an indicator for Oscars.

But all bets are truly off when it comes down to it.

The 2019 Oscars will air in the UK at 1 am GMT on Monday, February 25, 2019.
