Two Chinese Films Added to Berlinale Official Lineup

Today, the 2019 Berlinale announced an additional batch of films that are selected into the main competition section of the Festival. Chinese films Di Jiu Tian Chang (By Wang Xiaoshuai) and Öndög (by Wang Quanan) are among the selected films. According to sources familiar with the matter, Zhang Yimou’s new film One Second (Yi Miao Zhong) may also enter the official lineup and Lou Ye’s new film Cloud In The Wind may be selected to screen at the Festival. Both Wang Xiaoshuai and Wang Quanan had films selected into the Berlinale in the past. Read more on Mtime

‘UglyDolls Set for May 31 China Release

UglyDolls, an upcoming American computer-animated musical comedy film, has been scheduled to released in Chinese theaters on May 31. The film is co-produced by Hollywood’s STX Entertainment and China’s Alibaba Pictures and Hua Ying Film (华影公司). Based on the plush toys of the same name, the film follow’s the free-spirited UglyDolls’ journey to ultimately discover who you truly are is what matters most. The film is directed by Kelly Asbury whose previous works include Shrek 2 and Smurfs: The Lost Village. Read more on Mtime

This Year’s New Year Box Office Winner is A Chinese Remake of An Italian Blockbuster

Kill Mobile, the most recent winner at the China box office is a remake of the 2016 Italian hit Perfect Strangers. The film opened in theater on December 29 and made $41.42 million between December 30 and January 1. The comedy film has a rather simple yet engaging setting where seven friends decide to play a game of sharing their messages and calls of their phones. Although the story is adapted from the Italian version, it was successfully localized and truthfully presented a glimpse of Chinese social life. Read more on baijiahao
