What To See At The 2nd PIFF, According to Jia Zhangke

The 2ndPingyao International Film Festival will raise its curtain on October 11. Yesterday, the founder of the festival Jia Zhangke attended a press event in Pingyao and talked about the programs and highlights of this year’s PIFF. According to Jia, the festival has three sections: film screenings, educational programs and industry events. 55 films have been selected from over 1400 submissions. 45.5% of the films in the lineup will have world premiere and 76.4% of them will have their Asia premiere. Several films in the lineup have won awards at major international film festivals, such as Cannes, Locarno and Venice. Nearly half of the participating filmmakers are female. 10 master classes will be presented in the educational section, featuring veteran filmmakers, such as Johnnie To, Lee Chang-dong, Lav Diaz, Abderrahmane Sissako and Xu Zheng. The industry section will provide opportunities for filmmakers to pitch their projects and look for potential investors and collaborators. Read more on China News

Trends Identified At 2018 Beijing TV Market 

The fall section of the semi-annual Beijing TV Market opened today. 1122 shows, including about 800 tv dramas and 128 web series, are presented at the market. As 2018 is the 40th anniversary of China’s economic reform and 2019 will be the 70th anniversary of the founding of PRC, shows with nationalistic themes are expected to make up a large percentage of the upcoming slates. Chinese Posters of ‘Venom’ Released

Rumors have been circulating that American superhero movie Venom will be released in China. Recently, official Chinese posters of the film were released, further indicating that the film will hit Chinese theaters. Produced by Sony Pictures, Marvel, and China’s Tencent Pictures, the film is centered around journalist Brock who gains superpowers after being bound to an alien symbiote whose species plans to invade Earth. Since the film opened in North America, it has been highly anticipated by Chinese moviegoers.
