Ghanaian filmmaker, Leila Djansi will have her new movie, ’40 & Single’ premiered at two festivals this September and we are excited for her. It wouldn’t be the first time she’s premiering her movie at an international festival as she’s been doing so in the last few years.
40 and Single will be premiered at the 2018 Urbanworld Film Festival on September 22 and also at the LA Film Festival on September 25–Now that makes it two Ghana/USA film to be premiered at the Urbanworld Film Festival with the other one being ‘The Burial Of Kojo’
Leila’s ’40 And Single’ movie is an invitation into the tumultuous life of Ebaner Temple—a bi-racial, bi-sexual, single, bridal fashion designer. We witness her maneuver life in the African city of Accra, Ghana, where race and colorism have significant colonial roots and neo-colonial implications. Ebaner’s life and the lives of her clients intertwine as they explore the new age of the African woman, her independence and her challenges in a patriarchal society.
The movie featured Vanessa Williams, Leon Robinson, Miranda Bailey, Nikki Samonas, Adjetey Annan, John Savage, Deon Mattews, Rama Brew, and several others.
The movie was directed and written by Leila Djansi and knowing that Leila is 37 and single, I feel she wrote the story out of her own personal experience as a Single woman but decided to twist the story just a bit but I can’t conclude on that yet since I haven’t watched the movie.
We are not sure if Leila will ever premiere it in Ghana as she hardly premieres her movies in Ghana these days but we are certain it would be on Netflix soon for those who would want to watch it just like me.–Don’t worry if it’s released on Netflix, I will throw an all-girls party at my house, so we can all Netflix and chill—Winks!
Leila’s last movie before this one, ‘Like Cotton Twines’ was also premiered at the LA Film Festival and is also available on Netflix for viewing. She sold her other movie ‘Where Children Play’ for more than a $1 million to a studio in the USA, another reason why that movie was never premiered here in Ghana.
