The star plays the title role in Ophelia, a new movie exploring Hamlet from a totally different perspective.
Shared by Entertainment Weekly, the image of Ridley sees her with long red hair, sharing a scene with Naomi Watts.
Watts plays Queen Gertrude, her mother, and told the US publication about how the film reimagines Ophelia as a bold and complicated heroine; not like she comes across in Shakespeare’s original play.
“That’s often how women have been portrayed in storytelling — as the damsel in the distress,” she said.
“If their mind is powerful, it must be madness. And now there’s this shift that’s taking place, and that’s reflected in this storytelling.”
Harry Potter’s Tom Felton is also in the film, playing Laertes, while George MacKay plays Hamlet and Clive Owen is Claudius.
Ophelia doesn’t yet have a global release date, but it’ll be showing at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22, after which the first reactions will be gauged.
Ridley has a wealth of credits in the pipeline aside from the Lucasfilm franchise, and popped up in Murder on the Orient Express before Christmas.
She’s also voicing a character in the new version of Peter Rabbit, and plays alongside Tom Holland in dystopian drama Chaos Walking, due March next year.
She’ll also be in A Woman of No Importance, based on the book by Sonia Purnell.
Star Wars Episode 9 is due for release in December 2019.
