Mads Mikkelsen is set to follow-up Doctor Strange, Star Wars: Rogue One, and Hannibal, by starring in survival thriller, Artic. Directed by Joe Penna, Artic will be produced by Armory Films, with Martha De Laurentiis serving as Executive Producer. De Laurentiis previously worked with Mikkelsen on Hannibal and it’s a partnership that clearly works.
The film has been shot in the beautiful outdoors in the Icelandic Mountains, during what was one of their snowiest and coldest winters. The reason for this extreme location is that Iceland itself will be a character within the film. The main story surrounds a man stranded in the Artic; he’s just about to receive his long awaited rescue when there’s a tragic accident. He must then make the ultimate decision – should he remain in the relative safety of his camp, or does he embark on a deadly trek through the unknown?
Speaking about the project, Chris Lemole of Armory Films couldn’t sound more positive:
“We love this script. It’s a very human story about struggle and survival. We couldn’t be happier to have a talent like Mads Mikkelsen. He gives the character a depth and humanity that is essential for a film like this. Ryan [Morrison] and Joe [Penna] did a fantastic job with the script, and Mads was able to bring it to life,”
Armory seems to be on a roll at the moment so these words are definitely intriguing. His team recently produced and financed the Sundance hit film Mudbound, which stars Carey Mulligan, Jason Clarke, Jason Mitchell, Garrett Hedlund, Mary J. Blige and Jonathan Banks, and was the largest sale at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Directed by Dee Rees, it will get an Awards Season release via Netflix later this year. Time will tell if Artic can replicate the same success.
